Imaging Her Erotics: Essays, Interviews, Projects (Writing Art)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.44 $A visual and written record of the work of pioneer painter-performance artist Carolee Scheemann.Carolee Schneemann is one of the pioneers of performance, installation, and video art. Although other visual artists, such as Salvador Dali and Yves Klein, had used live self-portraiture and performance as a vehicle for public provocation, Schneemann was among the first to use her body to animate the relationship between the world of lived experience and the imagination, as well as issues of the erotic, the sacred, and the taboo. In the 1960s, her work prefigured the feminist movement's sexual self-assertion for women, and by the mid-1970s, her work anticipated the field of women's studies and its critique of patriarchal institutions. In the 1980s, she was one of the first to experiment with virtual environments. Imaging Her Erotics integrates images from Schneemann's works in painting, collage, drawing, and video sculptures with written material drawn from the artist's journals, dream diaries, essays, and lectures. Encompassing four decades of her work, it demonstrates her profound influence on artists in all media. An opening essay by Kristine Stiles presents Schneemann's major themes and places her work in a historical context. Among other topics, the book covers Schneemann's response to the widespread use by artists of the ideas of theoreticians such as Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, and Jacques Lacan; her relationship to male artists such as Joseph Cornell, Robert Morris, and Claes Oldenburg; and reminiscences about her friends Ana Mendieta, Charlotte Moorman, and Hannah Wilke. The book also contains essays by Jay Murphy and David Levi-Strauss and interviews with the artist by Kate Haug, Linda Montano, and Aviva Rahmani.

Dieter Roth Collected Interviews
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.94 $An intimate and inspiring firsthand encounter with the radical philosophy of the renowned twentieth-century artist Dieter Roth. The oeuvre of Dieter Roth (1930–1998) encompasses painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, film, video, music, typography, design, architecture, and, last but not least, literature. “His books alone would give him a place of honor in 20th-century art,” wrote artist Richard Hamilton, who championed Roth very early on. But is there a philosophy that ties his media together? In these interviews, Roth offered many surprising and fascinating clues to his life and line of thought.Included are conversations with Hamilton and the very intimate interview Roth conducted with writer Patrick Frey just a few days before his death, as well as many others. For Roth, who believed that art should not be harmless, but be true, the interviews were an attempt to depict what happens when speaking―the moments where a person loses their train of thought, when different languages get spoken, and when misunderstandings arise. For anyone who wants to become acquainted with Dieter Roth―the artist and thinker, as well as the human being―there is no better, more amusing, and authentic introduction than the richly illustrated Dieter Roth Collected Interviews, which also presents many of his poems and prose in English. 90 illustrations

The Wonder of Their Voices: The 1946 Holocaust Interviews of David Boder (Oxford Oral History Series) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.68 $Over the last several decades, video testimony with aging Holocaust survivors has brought these witnesses into the limelight. Yet the success of these projects has made it seem that little survivor testimony took place in earlier years. In truth, thousands of survivors began to recount their experience at the earliest opportunity. This book provides the first full-length case study of early postwar Holocaust testimony, focusing on David Boder's 1946 displaced persons interview project. In July 1946, Boder, a psychologist, traveled to Europe to interview victims of the Holocaust who were in the Displaced Persons (DP) camps and what he called "shelter houses." During his nine weeks in Europe, Boder carried out approximately 130 interviews in nine languages and recorded them on a wire recorder. Likely the earliest audio recorded testimony of Holocaust survivors, the interviews are valuable today for the spoken word (that of the DP narrators and of Boder himself) and also for the song sessions and religious services that Boder recorded. Eighty sessions were eventually transcribed into English, most of which were included in a self-published manuscript. Alan Rosen sets Boder's project in the context of the postwar response to displaced persons, sketches the dramatic background of his previous life and work, chronicles in detail the evolving process of interviewing both Jewish and non-Jewish DPs, and examines from several angles the implications for the history of Holocaust testimony.Such early postwar testimony, Rosen avers, deserves to be taken on its own terms rather than to be enfolded into earlier or later schemas of testimony. Moreover, Boder's efforts and the support he was given for them demonstrate that American postwar response to the Holocaust was not universally indifferent but rather often engaged, concerned, and resourceful.
